Few people, however, know the different ones. We are therefore no longer talking about one variety but SEVERAL varieties of lavenders. In this post, I am comparing these Essential Oils\u00a0 because they do not have the same benefits (although they are closely related), nor the same warnings and they are not used in the same fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavande2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"wp-image-9965 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavande2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;&lt;yoastmark\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavande2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavande2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavande2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lavender-flowers.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The different varieties of lavenders EO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Although there are numerous varieties, 4 of them are the most important:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>True Lavender<\/strong> <\/span>(Lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula vera, Lavandula officinalis): it is known also as fine or officinal lavender\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Spike Lavender\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Lavandula latifolia or Lavandula spica) or<em> wild lavender<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Hybrid Lavender<\/strong> <\/span>(Lavandula hybrida or Lavandula x burnatii clone super): it is a natural hybrid between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Sea Lavender<\/strong><\/span> (Lavandula stoechade): it is also known as <em>butterfly lavender<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A little bit of botany about lavenders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>True lavender<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 Lavandula vera \u2013 brings together in fact several lavenders. What makes them different is the altitude at which they grow because it will affect their biochemistry and the active components of the EO extract (notably the quantity of camphor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From the highest to the lowest we have, therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Fine wild lavender<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 Lavandula Angustifolia \u2013 its authentic form.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">This plant of 50 to 70 cm has only one flower on each stem and blooms at about 2000 m altitude in the Alps of Haute-Provence. It is the highest quality lavender (by its smell and composition) but its harvest is limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Cultivated fine lavender<\/strong><\/span> grows in the dry mountains of Provence on chalky terrain at about 800 to 1000 m altitude. It is rather fragile and its availability is uneven from one year to the next. It blooms from the end of June onwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Fresh, floral smell, makes it particularly interesting in perfumery<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Yield: 130 kg of flowers needed for 1 litre of EO by distillation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Officinal lavender<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Lavandula officinalis \u2013 cultivated on a larger scale and at a lower altitude is much more resistant.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Aroma: greener and more intense<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sensitive to cold weather, <strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Spike lavender<\/span><\/strong> is a small bush of a height of 30 to 60 cm, growing at an altitude of 200 to 800 m in the sunny Provence \u2018garrigue\u2019 (or scrubland) around the Mediterranean. It can be recognised by its larger, hairy leaves with several ramifications. Each stem carries several flowers of a small size. It blooms later and takes place during August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Perfume: less pleasant and more camphor<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Yield: 100 kg of flowers needed for 500 to 800 g of EO!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Hybrid lavender<\/strong><\/span> grows between 0 and 800 m altitude all over the world. It is large and has two ramifications, forming a very dense ball-like tuft. It is a natural hybrid born from the cross-pollination of the true (Lavandula vera) and the spike (Lavendula spica). Hybrid lavender (Lavandula x hybrida) is therefore sterile and is propagated by man through cuttings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Perfume: stronger and less subtle than fine lavender<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Yield: 1 litre of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">hybrid lavender EO needs <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">40 kgs of flowers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What they have in common<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Perennial shrubs or bushes with purple flower spikes, more or less perfumed depending on the variety, lavenders belong to the botanical family of Lamiaceae.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Originating in the Mediterranean region, they prefer dry soils and sunshine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">All lavenders have some common properties: all have healing properties and are more or less anti-infectious.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">True or Officinal Lavender EO<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993366; font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Lavandula angustifolia \u2013 Lavandula officinalis<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9849 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/lavender-essential-oil-illustration.jpg\" alt=\"lavender essential oil illustration\" width=\"136\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/lavender-essential-oil-illustration.jpg 250w, https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/44519946_l-166x300.jpg 166w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/>Its greatest interest lies in its perfect harmlessness, thus allowing the entire family to use it.
