These essences react to sunlight and can<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">leave some skin blemishes: this is photo-sensitivity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9839\" title=\"photo-sensitivity\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/1-300x203.png\" alt=\"photo-sensitivity\" width=\"459\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: impact, sans-serif;\">What is photosensitivity?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Photo-sensitivity occurs when there is an increase of skin sensitivity to sunlight (UV rays) following the absorption or application of some chemical or vegetable substances known as \u201cphoto-sensitive\u201d.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When we expose our skin to sun rays or other sources of UV rays (tanning lamps for example), these substances<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">are activated and cause irritation, sometimes a toxic one. Various skin reactions may occur:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">rashes, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">blisters, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">redness <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and light or dark brown blemishes, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">or an irreversible depigmentation.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">As far as the \u201cinvisible\u201d aspect is concerned, this can sometimes become dangerous. Such a reaction to sun rays causes modifications to the epidermis that can promote skin cancer\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We can find these substances in all essences that contain :<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">furocoumarins (for example bergapten or psoralen) <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and\/or psoralens, <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">also, methyl anthranilate which is found in citrus essences but<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">also in some EO<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The photo-sensitivity reaction varies between individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The time needed to eliminate the risk is not clear as yet. It can vary between 6 and 12 hours depending on the EO, the sun strength and the time of exposure\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: impact, sans-serif;\">Precautions of usage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Avoid exposure to UV rays at least 12 hours after:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> the application of photo-sensitive EO or a preparation containing some.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">the ingestion\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">of photo-sensitive EO<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It is, therefore, safer to use one at night or to choose using it in winter when exposure to UV rays is less likely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">IFRA (International Fragrance Association) is an institution in charge of:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">assuring the safety of raw materials in perfumery <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/Photo-sensitive-essentials-oils.pdf\">list<\/a> of the most common essences and essential oils concerned (not exhaustive)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>EO of the Citrus family (Rutaceae) extracted from zest:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/bergamot-essential-oil-organic\/\">Bergamot<\/a> (Citrus aurantium ssp bergamia op zest) &#8211; toning, deodorising and stimulating. Do not apply to the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium ssp aurantium op zest)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/lemon-essential-oil\/\">Lemon<\/a> (citrus liminum) or Lime (citrus limetta op zest) \u2013 antibacterial qualities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/grapefruit-essential-oil\/\">Grapefruit<\/a> (citrus paradisii op zest) \u2013 it brings a good mood and also works well as an aerial antiseptic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Cedrat (citrus medica) \u2013 very effective expectorant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Combawa (citrus hystrix) \u2013 it fights stress and insomnia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Other EO:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Khella (Amni visnaga)- antispasmodic, it dilates the bronchi (asthma attacks)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Angelica seeds \u2013 root (Angelica archangelica)- anti-stress and sedative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Celery (Apium graveolens)- it soothes cystitis, gout, arthritis\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Verbena (Lippia citriodora)- sedative and anti-inflammatory. Do not apply to the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Cumin (Cuminum cyminum)- digestion discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Carvi (Carum carvi) &#8211; it helps digestion, fights flatulence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/fennel-essential-oil\/\">Fennel<\/a> (Foeniculum vulgare)- it diminishes menopausal problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Dill (Anethum graveolens)- it eases bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Carrot (Daucus carota)- it fights brown blemishes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lovage (Levisticum officinale) : Very good for poison control, it is antitoxic and detoxifying. Lovage is also antibacterial, antifungal and anti-parasitic. It is widely used to treat psoriasis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Non-exhaustive list !!! Do not forget that although this is not an EO, Hypericum (Hypericum perforatum) is also photo-sensitive.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Good to know<\/strong>: Photo-sensitive EO lightens your hair colour.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Non-Photo-sensitive EO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On the other hand, Petit-Grain and Neroli, are both extracted from citrus leaves, not zests. They are not concerned with this problem of photosensitivity<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">because they do not contain furocoumarins. They can, therefore, be used internally and externally while being exposed to<\/span> sun rays<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The following EO are extracted from either the zest or the leaves of Rutaceae but they are not photo-sensitive:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Source: Essential Oil safety Tisserand\/Young<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bergamot without bergapten\/furocoumarins (Citrus aurantium)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lemon distilled by water vapour (Citrus Limonum)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lemon leaves<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lime distilled by water vapour<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Mandarin zest pressed (Citrus reticulata)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sweet orange zest pressed (Citrus sinensis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sweet orange leaves<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/yuzu-essential-oil\/\">Yuzu<\/a> (Citrus junos)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>So ladies, this summer:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Avoid concocting anti-cellulite massage oils containing grapefruit before going to the beach (keep the grapefruit for winter)\u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"> Forget lemon verbena, citrus essences or angelica on your skin in the morning or in the daytime. No Hypericum either.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> In short, in summer, only use citrus EO at night!
