It disrupts or paralyses the functioning of neurons reversibly or permanently.<\/p>\n<p>It causes disturbances such as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vision problems or of other senses,<\/li>\n<li>of sleep and mood.<\/li>\n<li>motor or muscle coordination disorders (e.g. paralysis),<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The risk is high by the oral route but lower by the dermal route.<\/p>\n<p>Know more about <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The molecules at fault<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ketones<\/strong> such as menthone, carvone, verbenone, and camphor: these molecules trigger neuronal tissue damage and convulsions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monoterpenes<\/strong>: alpha-pinene; beta-pinene; alpha-terpinene: these molecules can also cause convulsions, but only at high doses. Avoid the oral route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.8 cineole<\/strong> (oxid): essential oils rich in 1.8 cineole are not recommended for children under 7 or even 12 years of age.<\/p>\n<h2>The case of ketones<\/h2>\n<p>The components of essential oils that are known to be neurotoxic belong to the ketone family.<\/p>\n<p>Aromatherapy books often state that &#8220;all ketones are neurotoxic&#8221;. However, scientific studies on animal models, but also clinical trials, qualify this statement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The toxicity of ketones is relative and depends on several factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the nature of the ketone (some are more toxic than others: sesquiterpene ketones are much less toxic than the more aggressive monoterpene ketones);<\/li>\n<li>their degree of concentration in the essential oil;<\/li>\n<li>the doses used and the frequency of taking it;<\/li>\n<li>the administration route;<\/li>\n<li>the tolerance threshold: some people have a lower epileptogenic threshold;<\/li>\n<li>the age, the state of pregnancy or breastfeeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>The signs of intoxication<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The warning signs of acute poisoning are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vertigo,<\/li>\n<li>a feeling of being unwell,<\/li>\n<li>a sensation of disorientation,<\/li>\n<li>a lock of motor coordination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nausea is accompanied by loss of consciousness with respiratory discomfort or insufficiency and the appearance of psycho sensory disturbances.<\/p>\n<h2>Recommendations of usage<\/h2>\n<p>To limit the risks of potential neurotoxicity, the following recommendations are made:<\/p>\n<h2><u>Routes of administration<\/u><\/h2>\n<p>The cutaneous route is to be preferred. Toxicity by the cutaneous route is ten times lower than by the oral route. The EO must be diluted in oil without exceeding 6%.<\/p>\n<h2><u>Pregnancy, breastfeeding, child<\/u><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12211 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/pregnant_notallowed-compressor-e1550196878928.jpg\" alt=\"pregnant not allowed\" width=\"84\" height=\"84\" \/><\/u><\/h2>\n<p>Ketones cross the placental barrier and can cause convulsions which could be harmful to the pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Ketones pass into breast milk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><u><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12206 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/kids6_notallowed-compressor-e1550196663942.jpg\" alt=\"kids+6 not allowed\" width=\"83\" height=\"83\" \/><\/u><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Children are very sensitive to convulsive essential oils due to the immaturity of their central nervous system and the blood-brain barrier is less effective than that of an adult.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Use is strictly forbidden to pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants, children under 12 years of age and neurologically fragile people (all routes).<\/p>\n<p>Do not use for too long a period (more than 3 weeks) and beware of overdosing.<\/p>\n<h2><u>Special cases<\/u><\/h2>\n<p>The individual tolerance threshold for ketones may vary greatly. Their use is limited in people with epilepsy<\/p>\n<p>Their use is also forbidden in atmospheric diffusion or in aromatic baths for people with brain tumours.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The neurotoxic essential oils<\/h2>\n<h4><strong><u>Principal categories de ketones and their toxicity<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The main accidents recorded concern the following essential oils:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hysope officinale<\/strong> (<em>Hyssopus officinalis<\/em>)\u00a0: pinocamphone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sage officinale<\/strong> (<em>Salvia officinalis<\/em>)\u00a0: thujone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rosemary camphor<\/strong> (<em>Rosmarinus officinalis<\/em>): camphor<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mint pouliot<\/strong> (<em>Mentha pulegium<\/em>)\u00a0: pulegone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue Tansy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Absinthe<\/strong> (<em>Artemisia absinthium<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, as far as the oral route is concerned, the toxicity is unequal from one ketone to another depending on the EO:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Main ketones in decreasing order of toxicity<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>++++<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a et \u03b2-thujone: <em>Thuya occidentalis, sage officinalis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>fenchone: Lavender stoechade (<em>Lavandula stoechas<\/em>), <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/sweet-fennel-essential-oil-organic\/\">Fennel<\/a> (<em>F\u0153niculum vulgare<\/em>\u00a0var\u00a0<em>dulce<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>pinocamphone, isopinocampone: Hysope officinale (<em>Hyssopus officinalis<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>pulegone: Mint pouliot (<em>Mentha\u00a0pulegium<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>+++<\/p>\n<p>cryptone (antifungal): Eucalyptus cryptone (Eucalyptus polybractea), red gum tree (<em>Eucalyptus\u00a0camaldulensis<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>camphor (or borneone): <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/rosemary-ct-camphor-essential-oil-organic\/\">Rosemary camphor<\/a> (<em>Rosmarinus officinalis<\/em>\u00a0CT borneone),<\/p>\n<p>menthone: <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/peppermint-essential-oil-organic\/\">Peppermint<\/a> (<em>Mentha x piperita<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>piperitone\u00a0: field or wild mint (<em>Mentha arvensis<\/em>), Eucalyptus mint (<em>Eucalyptus dives<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>++<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/lavender-spike-essential-oil-organic\/\">Lavender spike<\/a> ((<em>Lavandula latifolia<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>verenone (hepatoprotective): <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/rosemary-verbenon-essential-oil-organic\/\">rosemary verbenone<\/a> (<em>Rosmarinus officinalis<\/em>\u00a0CT verbenone)<\/p>\n<p>\u03b2-diones: <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/helicrysum-essential-oil-organic\/\">Helichrysum<\/a> (<em>Helichrysum italicum<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>carvone: Carvi (<em>Carum carvi<\/em>), Dill (<em>Anethum graveolens<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>+<\/p>\n<p>acetone: silver fir (<em>Abies alba<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>atlantone: <a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/cedarwood-atlas-essential-oil-organic\/\">Atlas Cedarwood<\/a> (<em>Cedrus\u00a0atlantica<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>List<\/strong>\u00a0(non-exhaustive)\u00a0<strong>of ketone essential oils:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>dill (30 to 45 %), carvi (45 to 65 %), ladaniferous rockrose (5 to 10 %), coriander (4 to 6 %), curcuma (65 %), eucalyptus mint (35 to 40 %), eucalyptus cryptone (6 %), Fennel (3 to 5 %), geranium (6 to 9 %), helichrysum (10 to 15 %), hysope officinale (50 %), lavender spike (10 to 15 %), lavender stoechade (75 %), lavandin abrial (7 to 11 %), lavandin grosso (6 to 8 %), lavandin super (3 to 7 %), field mint (30 %), peppermint (32 %), mint pouliot (75 to 80 %, sometimes 90 %), spearmint (45 to 70 %), rosemary camphor (15 to 20 %), rosemary cineole (5 to 10 %), rosemary verbenone (10 to 15 %), sage officinalis (60 to 70 %), thuya occidental (70 %).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12211\" src=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/pregnant_notallowed-compressor-e1550196878928.jpg\" alt=\"pregnant not allowed\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/> Abortive essential oils<\/h2>\n<p>Essential oils with ketones do not directly cause contractions, consequently, they are not abortifacient as such. Abortion would occur following the intoxication of the mother by these essential oils.<\/p>\n<p>In general, neurotoxicity and abortifacient effect go hand in hand, considering that &#8220;the abortifacient molecules are globally the same as those responsible for neurotoxicity&#8221;, namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>a et \u03b2-thujone<\/li>\n<li>a et \u03b2 -Pulegone<\/li>\n<li>pinocamphone<\/li>\n<li>camphor<\/li>\n<li>thymoquinone<\/li>\n<li>Menthone<\/li>\n<li>Verbenone<\/li>\n<li>Carvone<\/li>\n<li>Italidione<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, it appears that other molecules, which are not ketones, should also be avoided during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>For example: (E) Anethole (fennel EO), B-Elemene (<a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/myrrh-essential-oil\/\">Myrrh<\/a> EO), methyl salicylate (<a href=\"https:\/\/catchymarketing.com.au\/pacific\/product\/wintergreen-essential-oil-organic\/\">Wintergreen<\/a>) or Sabinyl acetate (i.e. Yarrow).<\/p>\n<p>Ketones also have a hepatobiliary action, such as verbenone.<\/p>\n<p>They induce a disintegration, a dispersion during prolonged olfaction or an accentuation of the memory (verbenone again).<\/p>\n<p>Diketones have healing properties (<em>Helichrysum italicum<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Tricetones are antibacterial and have a strong skin tropism (<em>Manuka<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>Main abortive essential oils: <\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>Eucalyptus cryptone \u2013 Helicrysum &#8211; Lavender spike \u2013 Peppermint \u2013 Palmarosa \u2013 Parsley &#8211; Rosemary camphor &#8211;\u00a0 Rosemary verbenone &#8211; Sage officinalis &#8211; Thuya<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sources :<\/p>\n<p>Faucon M.,\u00a0<em>\u00a0Trait\u00e9 d\u2019aromath\u00e9rapie m\u00e9dicale et scientifique<\/em>, 2\u00e8me \u00e9dition, Sang de la Terre, 2017, p. 116, 142.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of the molecules that make up essential oils can be neurotoxic.
