KNOW A BIT MORE ABOUT GINKGO BILOBA

Native to Asia and the symbol of the city of Tokyo, the ginkgo has existed for hundreds of millions of years, which has sometimes earned it the nickname of “living fossil”. Indeed, it shows remarkable resistance to extreme conditions, climate change and other disturbances, and can live for over 1000 years. This tree can grow up to 30m high, and its leaves are flat, fan-shaped.

Ginkgo is a plant that can be either male or female, but it takes about 20 years after the first flowers have bloomed before you can tell them apart. The ‘female’ flowers have a characteristic smell.

Ginkgo is used in Asia in traditional medicine for its many benefits. In China in particular, they use fruit kernels against respiratory problems such as coughing or asthma.

Nowadays, scientists are mainly interested in the properties of ginkgo leaves. Rich in flavones, flavonoids, biolavones, glycosides and other interesting active ingredients, these have long been used to strengthen cognitive functions, boost memory and also improve blood circulation.

The World Health Organisation recognises as “clinically proven” the use of ginkgo leaf extracts in “the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate brain deficits associated with senile dementia: memory loss, concentration disorders, depression, dizziness, tinnitus or headaches with no known cause other than ageing”. It also recognises its use “to improve walking in intermittent claudication or after phlebitis, and to relieve vertigo and tinnitus of circulatory origin”.
